12指肠名称的由来：人们吃下去的食物，首先由食道进入胃里，然后便来到小肠最粗壮的一段——十二指肠。十二指肠大约有多长？大约30厘米。过去人们以为，这长度相当于12个手指头并列起来那么宽，其名称便由此而来。

可是，如果我们计算一下，将30厘米除以12，一个手指的宽度应是2.5厘米，这是相当粗大的。也许有人认为，这大概是以外国人的大拇指为标准算出来的。

其实，英文dozen的原意是一打，12个，也指“十二英寸长”，一英寸约为2.5厘米，这样算就对了。也就是说，十二指肠原来是指“十二英寸的肠”。当初翻译时为了便于人们理解，用“指”代替了“英寸”，后来也就将错就错了。

背景资料：以前，人们喜欢用自己身体的某一部分作为长度单位。如用脚长作为单位，用“拃”、“庹”作为长度单位，这样的单位有一个特点：那就是因人而异，不同的人用这个单位实际的长度也不一样。而像“米”、“厘米”这样的单位是国际通用的单位，它们的长度是固定的。
